Pohutukawa Tree limb removal - Beach Valley Road
Piha R&R has received the following information regarding removing the Pohutukawa Tree Limb hanging over Beach Valley Road. We are told this is to facilitate access for works to support the houses damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle. It will also simplify access in emergencies for our much appreciated and hard working Piha Volunteer Fire Crew
A quick note to let you know I received advice late last week regarding the Pohutukawa tree at 30 Beach Valley Road. Our Regional Arboriculture and Ecology team has inspected the tree, and the decision has been made to remove the large limb over the road due to its progressing subsidence. The tree was lifted in 2020 to improve the clearance above the road but unfortunately it has continued to drop further. The most recent measurement reveals that the tree has dropped by 203mm between 2020 and now.
Options for retention of the limb have been previously considered, including widening the road coupled with the propping of the limb. This option, while possible, is not practical. There is an existing resource consent to remove the limb.
The removal of the limb is tentatively booked for Thursday 18 May. The road is expected to be closed from 9am – 1pm to allow for the works to proceed. The Waitakere Ranges Local Board, iwi and The Tree Council have also been informed. We will also look to include an update to the Piha community on this in our next community update.
If you and the Piha R&R have any feedback regarding this proposal, please let me know and I can relay it back to the team.
Regards,
Simon
