Unauthorized Karo tree felling in North Piha Strand
Auckland Council has received a complaint about unauthorized Karo tree felling within the dune ecosystem area of North Piha Strand. The illegal felling of these trees will set back restoration work within this part of the dunes.
Vegetation within North Piha Strand is protected and trimming and/or removal is not permitted.
Karo trees and other endemic dune flora provides an important habitat for fauna, enhances the regions biodiversity and helps to protect against coastal erosion.
The Piha community, with support from the Waitākere Local Board and Auckland Council, has worked hard over many years to support and foster the restoration of a healthy dune ecosystem.
Should you notice any unauthorised tree trimming or felling taking place within North Piha Strand or any local parks or reserves within Piha, please report this through to the Auckland Council Contact Centre on (09) 301-0101. You can also let us know at our website: aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/report-problem
Many thanks for your assistance in this matter.
