Off With Their Heads
The Queen of Hearts knew what to do with agapanthus. A native of Africa, agapanthus has become a seriously invasive weed on the cliffs, roadsides and properties of Piha. Wind, gravity and storm water spread seeds over long distances.
Despite its appearance that some find appealing, agapanthus is one of the invasive weeds in Pest free Piha’s sights. Make your road the first to be free of agapanthus flowers. Please remove agapanthus flower heads now (ie don’t wait until seed sets) and place in the weed bin in the domain or in your rubbish bag.
For longer-term control, there are a number of options:
Spray with a mix of triclopyr (eg Grazon, Vanguard, Victory, Renovate, Brushoff) and penetrant (eg Pulse). May need 2 or 3 treatments. Triclopyr won’t harm flax, grasses or ferns, but keep away from other native seedlings. Read the label!
Cut plants close to the earth and paint the stump with 3-5mm Vigilant or Triumph Gel.
If you don’t like using herbicides, dig the plants out – a garden fork is the best implement.
Or just get in touch with Pest free Piha at pestfreepiha@gmail.com and we’ll give you a hand, including providing replacement natives eg renga renga lilies
DO YOUR BIT TO MAKE PIHA FREE OF INVASIVE WEEDS AND BIN THOSE AGGIES.
