Waitakere Ranges Local Board Chairperson, Greg Presland, says, “There is a need for public transport in the ranges – we are very keen that residents and visitors have better transport choices.”
Anthony Cross, Network Development Manager at AT, is pleased with the level of engagement from the community. “For services to be viable in the long term we need to see demand from local residents and ideally visitors too.”
“With the geographic nature of the Waitakere Ranges, we will be investigating innovative solutions such as a minivan, online booking system and on-demand services.”
Further investigation will be done after the New Network‘s implementation is completed in the second half of 2018.

Dear Submitters
Waitakere Ranges Public Transport Survey Results
Thank you for your feedback on public transport in the Waitakere Ranges and surrounding areas, during the survey conducted by Auckland Transport in March / April 2016. We have now published the results of the survey.
For detailed information about the feedback received please download the Survey Summary Report from www.AT.govt.nz/NewNetwork. Hardcopies are also available from local board offices, service centres and libraries in West Auckland (see a list at the end of this email).
Summary of the results
The survey received 356 hardcopy feedback forms and 483 online submissions, totalling 839 responses. The highest participation was from residents of Huia / Cornwallis / Parau (132 respondents, 13.8%) closely followed by residents from Wood Bay / French Bay / Paturoa Bay / South Titirangi (115 respondents,12.8%) and Piha (113 respondents, 12%).
Survey participants were asked to select their preferred destinations based on where they live. Feedback from people whose preferred destinations could be accommodated by the same route were analysed together. The popularity and likelihood of using a public transport service was the main focus of the analysis. Demand was analysed with respect to potential summer and winter usage, peak and off peak times and weekend patronage.
Results indicated that if we could provide a service, there would be a relatively low level of demand which is not sufficient to trial a viable service. However, two potential routes were identified that AT will be investigating further: 1) Piha to Glen Eden via Waiatarua and Oratia, and 2) Huia to New Lynn.
Further assessment into funding and route options will be undertaken in the second half of 2018 after the implementation of the new bus network.
