A message from Jordi Joan Tablada
Kia Ora Piha, as many of you know nesting season is starting. A couple of us are already monitoring some of our shorebirds here in Piha. Today we put a few signs around the mid Piha area, where a couple of NZ Dotterels pairs and at least a pair of Variable Oystercatcher tend to hang out and hopefully nest. Like the majority of NZ shorebirds, these two species are under threat so we’d like to ask you to please respect the signs and try to keep disturbance to a minimum. We’re planning to cordon the area between the two streams (hopefully better than last year) and might do some pest control, but will talk to the neighbors first on this matter. Sean and I will be keeping an eye on the nests/eggs/chicks and we’re more than happy to answer any questions or receive any suggestions. Thanks!
