Nesting dotterels need protection at North Piha
Auckland Council is moving to protect nesting dotterels in the dunes between the Marawhara and Wekatahi Streams. This is the first time for many years that dotterels have nested at Piha: there are thought to be only about 5 breeding pairs on the coast, at Te Henga and Whatipu.
The Council will be taping off the area and erecting signs. Also letting locals know what is happening and asking they keep their dogs away from the area, in yellow below.
This is particularly important for residents in Marine Parade North, Garden Road and North Piha campers Club.
The area is an off-leash area but residents are being asked to keep their dogs away while the Council considers whether more protections are necessary.
Fencing has been erected and signs put up and leaflets are going out.
Let’s keep everyone informed and protect this nesting area. If we do not, we could see a temporary dog ban in the area !
