We have received the following advice from Auckland Council regarding Piha Rubbish Bins (See photo below)
Dear Piha Ratepayers and Residents
As you may have now heard many of the bins at Piha have been identified to contain asbestos. The test has confirmed that the barrel type bins, as per the attached photo, contain particles of chrysotile (white asbestos) which can be hazardous when airborne. As the bins have now become degraded to a point where Parks are not confident that the particles will remain undisturbed and contained under the paint seal, the bins have now been isolated and wheelie bins are locked in place as a temporary alternative.
Parks have engaged a certified asbestos removal contractor to undertake the works to remove these bins and there works are proposed to be carried out Tuesday or Wednesday next week. We will also begin the process to install suitable replacement bins in the near future.
